At the Mono Summit in Madrid, developers discussed the new strategy for Mono on Mac OS X. According to a blog entry posted by Mono creator Miguel de Icaza, a native OS X backend for Windows.Forms will be included in Mono 1.2.6, with additional improvements planned for version 1.2.7.

- MonoDevelop enables developers to quickly write desktop and web applications on Linux, Windows and macOS. It also makes it easy for developers to port.NET applications created with Visual Studio to Linux and macOS maintaining a single code base for all platforms.
- I'm trying to get a Mono install running on a mac (OS X version 10.10.5), and while the install states that it's completed successfully, I'm not able to call mono from the terminal. To install it, I ran uninstallMono.sh as root to ensure we didn't have any leftover cruft, then ran MonoFramework-MDK-4.0.4.1.macos10.xamarin.x86.pkg.

The Mono runtime for OS X will also include the GTK# bindings and Imendio's native OS X GTk port, which will make it possible for GTK# applications to run on OS X without requiring X11. The Mono developers are also actively working on porting the MonoDeveloper integrated development environment to both Windows and OS X. Support for WinForms and GTK# applications on OS X is a big win for .NET cross-platform portability.

In the blog entry, de Icaza also talks about some plans for MonoDevelop. After MonoDevelop 1.0 is released in January, the developers plan to add support for integrated debugging and Silverlight application development.
